I recently had a great steak lunch in posh Chelsea for only £10 at the Orange Elephant restaurant. For £10 we enjoyed a 6oz hanger steak with steak sauce, beef dripping chips, salad and a glass of wine. Whilst hanger steak isn’t my favourite cut, the quality of ingredients was top notch and it was excellent value for money.

The concept of the Orange Elephant is the same as the Relais de Venise L’Entrecote. There is no a la carte menu, you come here for steak. Both restaurants even have a suspiciously similar tasting secret recipe steak sauce. Where the Relais de Venise have the edge is in how they serve half your steak first, and the second half later so your meal remains hot. At the Orange Elephant, you receive your entire meal straight up and the steak is sliced, so it becomes cold quickly.
But the Orange Elephant wins on its value for money. The £10 hanger steak lunch deal means the restaurant is full during the week with staff from the nearby Chelsea & Westminster hospital.
Their signature meal deal is £20 for a salad appetiser followed by a 12oz sirloin steak on the bone with steak sauce and beef dripping chips. Otherwise for £80 you can order the 1.3kg Tomahawk steak with salad and chips for sharing with a group of friends. They also have an extensive wine and dessert menu.
The Orange Elephant is named after a particular breed of Devonshire cows, known for their rusty orangey hair, big ears and round faces. The steak we had ordered was cooked to perfection and tasted tender and juicy.
The interior design is comfortable and slick. The length of one side of the restaurant are banquet seats and there is a combination of exposed brickwork and wood floors. They have a semi-open kitchen, and you can catch a glimpse of the chefs through a small opening at the back of the restaurant. They have a couple of cheesy quotations painted on the wall, including: “some people want a perfect relationship, I just want perfectly cooked steak”.
The location is marvellous. Chelsea is one of the prettiest neighbourhoods in London, particularly in the warmer months when the trees are in bloom. The Orange Elephant is located on 351 Fulham Road, SW10 9TW. It is a 20 minute walk from Sloane Square station and around the corner from Kings Road, where there are plenty of shops to browse after your meal.
