I had a great inexpensive lunch at A-Roy at Novena Square in Singapore. The staff were courteous, the food was delicious and the coconut milkshake was heavenly. It is a great place to take a foodie shopping break for anyone who loves Thai food.

My mum and I stumbled upon this little place when we had ducked inside the Novena shopping centre to escape the oppressive midday heat. A-Roy is located on the third floor just passed the food court. We were greeted in a friendly fashion by the hostess and led inside a light and airy restaurant to a pleasant table by the window.
We were given a decorative bowl filled with prawn crackers and a side of lime and chilli dipping sauce on arrival. The sauce had a lot of kick and was really chilli hot but addictive. I ordered a thick, creamy coconut milkshake to drink. It tasted like it had been blended with a little ice, fresh coconut and some coconut milk and it was seriously delicious. It is a must-try for any coconut lover.
We ordered two main dishes for sharing. The first was a pork larb, a light pork salad with onions, lime juice, chilli and mint served on lettuce leaves. It tasted zingy and refreshing and it complemented our second dish of duck curry well. The curry had generous chunks of pineapple, cherry tomatoes and Thai eggplant. The eggplant didn’t taste at all bitter, which can sometimes can be the case with that small round variety. It could have contained more roast duck of which there were only 4-5 slices that were quite bony. However the curry had a rich sauce that was flavoursome and not too spicy and it tasted good with plenty of steamed rice.
Our total bill for two people was S$50, which was reasonable for the good quality food, aromatic flavours and pleasant air-conditioned venue. The menu is also pretty extensive with all the Thai classic dishes available. So if you are in the neighbourhood and fancy a spot of Thai, I would recommend visiting A-Roy Thai Restaurant.
